Group Work Presentation

I am going to dedicate this post in order to explain what my contribution was in relation to the group work presentation. My group chose to discuss Organic design, and we where to discuss what came before, and after, the characteristics of organic design and each chose a designer related to this era and discussed his work.

I chose Arne Jacobsen, and I started off by introducing him and describing what his thought in regards to design are. Than the following slide, I dedicated it to his social and cultural context and the events that occurred during his life that affected his designs and the manner in which he produced his work. For instance since Denmark suffered from the Second World War, his designs in the late 1940’s where shaped and based upon the need for fast construction of housing and public buildings, and later on, when things settled, he could focus on experimentation.

Then I attributed the other slide in relation to other designers that influenced him such as Ray and Charles Eames and in what way was he influenced. I discussed his Ant chair in detail, and the techniques and materials he used in order to construct his design and what were the characteristics of the chair.

Then, I wanted to discuss something in relation to his work in architecture, furniture, and product design. And so I dedicated one slide for each criteria. I started off with architecture and discussed his major design of the SAS Ari Terminal and Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. And in the next slide, which was allotted to furniture design, I discussed the Egg Chair that was designed in collaboration to the hotel, and so I could make a reference and connection to both of his works, and was also able to discuss and contrast the sculptural design of the chair to the geometric structure of the hotel.

The last slide I chose to discuss a line of products that Jacobsen was responsible for designing. I chose to discuss the Cylinda Line that was produced for and manufactured by Stelton.

Apart from the context in relation to this designer, who influenced him in creating his stunning pieces, and the people who assisted him in his production, and a discussion upon several products in accordance to different criteria, I was also involved in the production of the introduction of the presentation. I found information in relation to the characteristics of organic design. I also compared the definition and contrasted it with what Frank Lloyd Wright used to believe, and I mentioned this particular architect and designer on purpose since we decided to start off with him when elaborating upon a designer each. I also compared him with Charles Rennie Mackintosh who was a contemporary designer to Wright. I chose to discuss Mackintosh in an introductory stage, since his work attributed to organic design, was one of the first that contributed to the formation of this movement. Other members of the group sought the rest of the introductory information.

In addition, in my section in relation to Arne Jacobsen, I mentioned Ray and Charles Eames on purpose in order to create a connection in relation to the rest of the slides since, another member of my group was to discuss their designs next. I also mentioned Verner Panton and the Pop design era in my part, and I did so in order to link the two designers and movements together, especially when a reference to pop design is to be then mentioned in the concluding part when discussing what came after organic design. Since organic design is still present till this very day, we chose to first say what came after, and then mention some contemporary designs, however this part was to be researched by another member of the group.
